I had an emergency colostomy in December, 2011, as a result of a bowel perforation from a severe case of diverticulitis. I was not at all prepared for this type of surgery emotionally, and it took its toll on me.

Ostomy information and assistance with pouches and supplies is usually not very thorough in hospitals. I did the best I could watching DVDs and contacting suppliers of ostomy products, but still felt very overwhelmed and under-informed. I found out about the ostomy support groups through an acquaintance who had an ileostomy. It took me a while, but one desperate day, I contacted the Macomb County Ostomy helpline and left a message, and the President of the group, promptly called me back. Iremember stating that I felt like a stranger in a strange land. Their honesty, support, and concern were Blessings for me. I attended the very next monthly meeting.

My ostomy friends continue to be a great source of strength to me. They have such strong spirits, and a great sense of humor. The group has probably saved my sanity, if not my life.
